We leave Key West and head north up the Hawk Channel. We cannot do this portion of the Inland Waterway as the depths are as low as 5 feet and we draw 6.5 feet. The Hawk Channel is behind the Barrier Reef (3 largest in the world) and has a minimum depth of 9 feet. Still it feels weird to have less than 3 feet of water under the keel at times. The water is so clear and shallow that we can see our shadow on the bottom!! We have perfect weather and have to erect shade cloths to keep from burning to a crisp, even with #50 sun screen on.
We anchor in Bahia Honda. The sun sets behind the two bridges that define the anchorage. This turns out to be our deepest anchorage, with 6 ft under the keel.
We anchor in Biscayne Bay on a Saturday evening. The anchorage is a mad house of weekend boaters and "personal" watercraft. Two, yes two, tow boats are in attendance in the anchorage. The noise and wake are unrelenting until sunset. Then they all leave and we are able to rest. Miami has a beautiful waterfront and we would like to return some day to see the city.
